Dead Rising 2 opens up with Chuck Greene and his daughter Katey in the Fortune City Arena. A series of cinematics make it clear that Chuck is a contestant on Terror Is Reality XVII: Payback, competing for money towards his daughter's much-needed doses of Zombrex. The player must finish a round of TIR before advancing on towards the open world of Fortune City.
Whether the player come in first or last only affects the amount of reward money they receive. In either case, characters still remain "disappointed" in Chuck's performance, as they all know he does not enjoy competing. After he washes up and changes, Chuck goes looking for his daughter as well as some more Zombrex. The elevator is disabled from a sudden explosion and Chuck crawls out into the zombie-infested hallways behind the arena.
The player must find Katey, who is hiding in a locker in the Green Room, and escape the arena in search of the Safe Room. After leaving the arena, a cutscene follows of Chuck and Katey making it to the Safe Room and meeting some key characters of the game, including Stacey Forsythe and Raymond Sullivan. Chuck quickly realizes that he has no Zombrex, as there is no supply in the Safe Room, and Katey will need some soon.
Travel to the Green roomEdit
After the introductory cutscene, Chuck is in the locker room.
Player has control. Chuck needs to walk to the green room.
Prize money acquired, $10,000 for first place. Fulfillment bonus 5000 PP.
Chuck walks past Amber on the way to the green room.
Amber: Well who do we have here?
Chuck arrives at the elevator. A cutscene begins.
Chuck's goal is to find Katey.
When Chuck gets out of the broken elevator there are several weapons next to the elevator:
Chuck can watch Shaun Wexler and Tom Ebersole be devoured by zombies through a metal barrier to his right. Like all of the survivors in the introduction, there is ultimately nothing Chuck can do to save these survivors.
Run down the hallway towards Alice Paynter.
There is also an Electric guitar further along in the corridor.
Chuck will pass several other items including folding chairs
Pass Alice Paynter and turn right.
Run down the hallway to the green room on the left.
A cutscene begins.
Escape the arena to the emergency shelterEdit
After the cutscence Chuck is carrying Katey.
The ticker tape at the bottom announces that Chuck can Press to kick while carrying Katey.
Chuck is nearly invincible while carrying Katey as long as he keeps moving. Zombies will stagger if he runs by them while carrying Katey. Chuck will really only get hit if he stops.
Run out the door.
As Chuck runs towards the double doors, survivor Irwin Sagehorn stumbles through the doors, pursued closely by a zombie. Run through the double doors with the blue arena lobby sign above.
Press to kick while carrying Katey.
Follow the hallway as it curves.
Run through the hallway and into the arena. Avoid protracted battles with zombies and keep running.
In addition to Pat Berkson and Jeremiah Eckland, there is Lucas Pontremoli, Adrian Lee, Andrea Brenser, Lance Pennington, Kalee Timmons and Helen Bonner being attacked in the Arena. Chuck's destination is on the left, past the barricades.
Run past the barricades.
Past the barricades are some stairs. Beyond the stairs is Chuck's destination, the exit doors to the Platinum Strip.
Press to open the exit doors. The final introductory cutscene begins.

Acquire food and save the gameEdit
After the six minute multiple cutscenes Chuck is in the security room.
A tutorial screen appears explaining Co-op Mode.
A second tutorial screen appears explaining time.
Chuck receives the Map and transceiver.
Sullivan is just outside of the security room, guarding the security door.
Although not necessary, Chuck can speak to Sullivan.
Sullivan Those doors are locked tight. No zombies will be getting in here.
Save your game now.
Exit the security roomEdit
Travel down the hallway past distraugt Kirby.
Travel down the stairs.
To the right is an enormous ventilation system. Click to examine the vent door. Another cutscene begins.
Stacey's first call Edit
Follow the guide arrow to the right. There are exit signs also to guide Chuck.
Chuck's first orientation call
Continue down the hallway, to Chuck's right is a locked maintenance room.
Go through the double doors with the exit sign above them.
Save the sledge hammer for later
Exit out into Royal Flush Plaza.
Travel to Roy's MartEdit
Turn right and follow the guide arrow to Roy's Mart.

After Chuck kills the three looters, another cutscene begins. Chuck finds a pharmacy key for the door behind the counter.

Talk to Denyce Edit
Denyce: I thought they were going to kill me!
Chuck: It's okay. You're safe now. Are you hurt?
Denyce: I think I'm okay. Thank you so much. You got here before they…. Before they…
Chuck: Listen, there's a Safe House where you'll be safe. Follow me and I'll take you there.
Deynce will join.
Escorting Survivors tutorialEdit
When Deynce joins, a tutorial screen appears.
- There are survivors of the outbreak scattered throughout Fortune City. Escort anyone you find back to the Safe House, though some might not come with you willingly...
- Press the to call a survivor to you, or press + to send them to a specific location.
- Upon rescuing survivors, you will receive a large PP bonus!
Open the pharmacy doorEdit
Open the pharmacy door. The pharmacy key is used automatically.
The Zombrex is on the counter.
Pick up the Zombrex.
- Zombrex is a drug that stops the infected from becoming zombies. It is high in demand, expensive, and hard to find.
- The new and improved Zombrex formula now lasts 24 hours!
- Zombrex overdoses are deadly, users must never take it earlier than prescribed.
- The Zombrex Counter on your HUD [ Head-up display ] shows how much you have at all times.
- Katey needs Zombrex everyday between 7:00AM and 8:00AM. If she doesn't get it, she will die.
- Check your watch to see if it's time for Katey's next dose.

Urgent call from StaceyEdit
Chuck's watch screen shows how much time is left.
Chuck's goal is the safe house, marked as a bright red question mark on the map.
Escort Denyce back to the safe house.
Wait until there is a green door icon above Deynce's head before entering the safe house. The green door icon shows that the survivor is close enough that they will follow Chuck into the safe house.
Denyce: Those guys were stealing everything. Thanks for saving my life.
Escorting Denyce awards Chuck 10,000 Prestige Points
After successfully escorting Denyce, there is a brief cutscene with Sullivan in which he says the safe house cannot afford to have any infected admitted.
Giving Katey ZombrexEdit
Chuck must give Katey Zombrex between 7:00 am and 8:00 am. This gives Chuck plenty of time to explore the mall as he waits for 7:00 am.
After Chuck gives Katey Zombrex, Case 1-1: Big News begins, which is a cutscene only. Chuck and Stacey are watching the television news in the safe house.
Case 1-1: Big NewsEdit
After giving Katey her daily dose of Zombrex, a cinematic follows of Chuck as he grabs himself a cup of coffee. Stacey Forsythe is watching the news as reporter Rebecca Chang broadcasts live from the Fortune City Hotel. She speculates that the outbreak occurred inside the Fortune City Arena during last night's TIR show. Security footage plays of a man wiring explosives to a gate holding back zombies, the gate exploding, and the zombies pouring into the hallways behind the arena. She says that the suspect is reported to be Chuck Greene, member of the zombie rights portest group CURE. Chuck is shocked by the report, as is Stacey. He tries to calm her and assure her that he is innocent and if he can find Rebecca Chang, he can prove it.

Case 1-2: Alive on LocationEdit
As Chuck is leaving the safe house, Sullivan gives him the maintenance room key. As Chuck is walking down the hallway between the Safe House and Royal Flush Plaza, another cutscene shows with zombies in the corridor. In a cutscene, the game shows Chuck how to build his first combo weapon, the Spiked Bat.
Travel to the hotelEdit
Set Chuck's watch to set the guide arrow to the case if needed.
Chuck's destination is Fortune City Hotel.
Turn right toward Americana Casino.
Enter Americana Casino at the door by pressing .
Travel through the hotel.
Head to the Platinum Strip exit.
Travel to the left. Travel along Platinum Strip, following the guide arrow.
The hotel will be on the right.
The hotel has green pillars at the entrance.
Enter the hotel, a cutscene begins.
Case 1-3: InsecurityEdit
Chuck follows Rebecca Chang to the security room to see the security tapes there. In the security room, the staff has been killed and any evidence destroyed. Stacey calls to tell Chuck that he needs to return to the Safe House. Sullivan has seen Chuck on television and is threatening to kick Katey out of the safe house.
Leaving the hotelEdit
Follow Rebecca out of the hotel.
Follow Rebecca through the South Plaza.
Rebecca allows Chuck to save the game while she waits.
Rebecca: Hey Chuck, there's a bathroom here if you need to take a "rest".
Rebecca: I'll wait out here while you do your business. Talk to me when you're ready to go.
Rebecca: Feeling better? Let's get going.
Running from the bathroomEdit
Follow Rebecca again.
There is a closed gate up ahead. A cutscene at the gate begins.
Running to the safe houseEdit
Enter the hallway to the arena security.
The door is on the right.
Open the door and a cutscene begins in the security room.
